|Abbottabad compound where Osama bin Laden was killed|
May 2, 2011 Across America and around the world, we all today are very much impacted by the news of Osama bin Laden’s death. Did I say ‘death’? Excuse me, I meant his taking out by American special forces, SEAL Team Six and CIA Paramilitary troops. We took him out. Forty minutes, and it was over. Osama bin Laden is dead, and no country in the world wanted his body. (At least, that is what I heard broadcasted.) Saudi Arabia did not. It wanted no part of the man now.
I am today reminded of how the Scriptures describe the ultimate end of the devil, how he is almost sneered at as onlookers see his powerlessness at that time. “They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying ‘Is this the man that made the earth to tremble…?’ (Isaiah 14:16) The seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. In fact, though all the kings of the nations shall lie in glory in their own graves, their own places of burial, it is written of Lucifer, in Isaiah 14, that “Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial…” Bin Laden’s body, purportedly, was sent out to sea. He was not buried.
I was possessed of a deep, full joy during the hours following my learning of bin Laden’s death. But I could not celebrate as others did. That was not in me. And as those hours passed, I finally cried. It is a shock as well as a relief. Ten years of threatened life & liberty, of national as well as worldwide terror alerts, of lives sacrificed in this cause doesn’t change in a moment. That reality with which we lived doesn’t just…stop, does it? There must be a processing period. Plus, a large part of that reality still is just that – altered, but still a reality.
The continued threat of terrorist attacks will keep us united, as Americans – more so than ever now, because this one and very major victory at the Abbottabad complex in Pakistan represents We the People in action. And is the culmination of ten years of already being united against an enemy. It worked. We prevailed. Our American spirit has been vindicated. And reinforced. What Osama bin Laden and his minions intended for evil, seems to be producing good.
May it ever be so.
God bless America.
